Communities across Tameside plan to grow their own food in a plan to use underutilised land across the Borough as community allotments . "Diggin Tameside" is due to start in Stalybridge where eight community groups are interested aswell as schools.

Kevin Garside the Integrated Neighbourhood Services Manager for East Tameside said "we have lots of land that we dont do anything with, the idea behind digging Tameside" is to encourage communities to grow on these plots, these can be anywhere such as near main roads, car parks, schools and factories".

Aswell as using spare land it encourages skills within the community such as gardening and cooking. The first "digging Tameside"meeting took place in Mossley where Mary Clear of "Incredible Edible todmorden"gave a presentation on the workings of a similiar scheme in Todmorden.
