One of the Stalybridge street pastors seen here helping make for a safer night out in Stalybridge
Street Pastors is a national initiative which seeks to make the streets safer at night by diffusing conflict situations which are often fuelled by alcohol.
In Stalybridge members of local churches patrol the streets from 10.00pm on Saturday nights until 3.00am on Sunday morning! They offer help and support to vulnerable people who are often the ‘worse for wear’.
The Stalybridge team started in July 2010 and currently has 23 active volunteers who have all undertaken extensive training and are drawn from several churches in the town and beyond. The team have had considerable success in changing the atmosphere in the town at night, preventing several serious incidents and caring for many vulnerable people.
