A 2,000 name petition was handed to Tameside Council bosses by demonstrators asking them to reconsider putting the historic building on the market.
A row has broken out over the library with council leader Kieran Quinn stating that Hyde library has in fact been saved as it's services will be moved to Hyde Town Hall and he added "the decision to relocate Hyde library is the right thing to do."
Opponents of the move said it was only six years ago that the library was refurbished and a new gallery put in. Campaigners claimed "it's the destruction of our heritage in Hyde, you can't replace buildings like that. Architectually, it's a gem. Campaigners have applied to English Heritage to have it considered for listed status, the campaigning group hope to thwart Tameside Council's attempt to sell the building.
