Your tameside had the privilege of visiting the Icare Community Meals team recently at their Robinson street offices in Ashton-under-lyne. The Icare team have stepped in to fill the void left by the recent cuts to social services which has left many older people with very little or no human contact and companionship. They provide that vital human connection by offering companionship whilst delivering their meals.

Icare rightly describe themselves as the 4th emergency service in Tameside and have forged a partnership with "The Silver Line" charity which was launched in November 2013 and inspired by Esther Rantzen from her own experience of loneliness whilst writing for a column for a national newspaper.She was inundated with letters from people in similiar circumstances which prompted her to get involved in setting up The Silver line Charity which organises companionship and any help needed with support organisations. It is estimated that half of all the 75 year olds in the UK are living alone and that as many as 1 in 4 are suffering from intense loneliness. They work with The silver line Charity to ensure that any concerns regarding the people they visit are relayed to them.

Icare offer both hot and cold meals, the cold meals can be heated up in a microwave. They are the only company in Tameside that proivides hot meals. There is a wide variety of meals and desserts, I nearly tucked into a delcious chocolate chip sponge before it was whisked away for delivery.Sandwiches aswell as tea time treats such as cakes and fruit juices are also delivered there is also a a home shopping service.Icare deliver meals 365 days of the year, 7 days a week including christmas day,throughout Tameside.

It was enlightning and heartwarming in these times of austerity cuts to see a company like Icare stepping in to fill the gap going way beyond just delivering meals with all staff staying with their clients and bonding with them for a minimum of 15 minutes on each delivery, a lot of  the time this is the only contact the elderly person gets. The Tameside team are Icare's flagship team, the most dedicated and caring team of all the Icare Community meal teams in the Uk.
