An ambitious plan to redevelop Ashton-Under-Lyne town centre have been unveiled. The proposals will see the Tameside Councils offices replaced by an eco-friendly building shared with Tameside college and other businesses in the £76 million scheme.
Tameside College also plan to construct another building on the Camp Street car park,which will include a 200 seat theatre and classrooms for creative,media and art subjects. The money for the redevelopment will mostly come from the college and the Skills Funding Agency and will attract over 3,000 students and 300 staff into Ashton town centre.Tameside Council will spend around £13million on its new offices,which will save around £1.5 million in running costs.
Kieran Quinn,Tameside Council leader,says"this programme will give a massive boost to Ashton's economy and enable us to complete our plan to redevelop the town centre and market ground making it into a more modern and convenient place to shop."
