Retired teacher and grandfather from Audenshaw Patrick Herman has become the first person in Greater Manchester to donate blood one thousand times and is only one of 20 people in the country to have reached that milestone.
Patrick now 69 first gave blood 50 years ago after being inspired by his school teacher. He said "I still remember him talking about the NHS and how we shouldn't misuse it and how we should help others when we can. He said we should support the NHS and that has stuck with me all my life".
To celebrate his achievement he met patients who received blood from donors at a special event at the Manchester Blood centre in Plymouth Grove. Barbara Blanche lead donor relations manager for NHS Blood and Transplant said"Patrick Herman's commitment to saving lives is amazing. We are very grateful to him and want to thank him on behalf of all patients that he has helped."
