A NATIONAL hero will be celebrating local stars at the Pride of Tameside Sports Awards this Friday (23 September).
Ashes winning England cricket captain Michael Vaughan OBE will be the guest speaker at the prestigious event at Dukinfield Town Hall, which recognises sporting achievements from around the borough.
There were more nominations than ever before this year and they were of such a high quality that the judges had their work cut out choosing winners in the seven categories: Alex Williams Volunteer of the Year, Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award, Unsung Hero of the Year, Sports Achiever of the Year, Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year, Coach of the Year and Club of the Year.
The host for the evening is Tameside Radio’s award-winning breakfast presenter Louise Croombs who has worked with Sports Tours International as PA on a variety of events including this year’s Salford 10k and the Tour of Tameside.
Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Philip Fitzpatrick, who will be opening the event, said: “The finalists are just a snapshot of the many committed men, women and children who dedicate so much of their lives to sport in Tameside – be it individually, as part of a team or to helping others get involved and achieve their best. They make a huge contribution to their local community as well as raising the profile of the borough and keeping active and healthy. They richly deserve this recognition.”
The night is sponsored by New Charter Housing Trust Group, Tameside Council, Manchester Airport, Myson Pages, Hilly Clothing, Sportmax, Obson and Co, O2 Ashton-under-Lyne, Davies Sport, Delicious and Belle Vue Coaches.
Winners will go on to the Greater Manchester Sports Awards.
