Pay and display prices are to be cut across Tameside council car parks in a bid to boost business in the borough’s town centres.

The cheaper charges will be introduced from November 24 in ‘zone 1-4’ car parks which fall in the main shopping districts of Ashton, Stalybridge, Denton and Hyde.

Motorists will pay £1 for up to three hours - down from a maximum of £2.50 - and £2, down from £3.50, to leave their vehicles all day if restrictions allow.

Charges for short-stay shoppers stopping for half an hour of less will remain at 50p and prices in zone 5-7 car parks will stay the same.

Council chiefs say they have listened to feedback from businesses, residents and shoppers and decided to lower the charges, making Tameside the best value borough for parking in Greater Manchester.

Executive leader Coun Kieran Quinn said: “Supporting a strong economy is a key priority for the council. We want to do all we can keep our town centres busy, vibrant and appealing.

“After listening to feedback from traders and shoppers, we’re pleased to announce we will be introducing these new cheaper and very competitive rates to support local business and make town centre parking more affordable and attractive.”

Coun Peter Robinson, head of transport and land use, added: “Although our rates were already competitive against what other local authorities are charging we recognise they also need to be attractive when compared against private car parks and out of town shopping complexes.

“We have responded to feedback and – although we do still need to cover maintenance costs of our car parks – we’re confident these hugely reduced charges will make it more convenient and attractive for shoppers to visit our town centres and shop local.”

Car parks in zones 1-4 are as follows:

Ashton: Henrietta Street, Church Street, Water Street, Mulberry Street, Old Cross Street, Wimpole Street, Crown Street, Mill Lane, Union Street, Old Street and Burlington Street.

Denton: All car parks.

Droylsden: Craven Street.

Hyde: All excluding Grafton Street.

Stalybridge: All car parks.

Charges will remain the same in zones 5-7 which cover Stamford Park, Rassbottom Street in Stalybridge, Grafton Street in Hyde, Dukinfield town hall and Market Street and Greenside Lane, Droylsden.
