Covid vaccination drive passes 100,000 milestone

TAMESIDE and Glossop's Covid vaccination drive has reached a major milestone with 100,000 residents now having received their life-saving jab.

Local primary care teams haven't paused since vaccine rollout commenced in December 2020. The significant figure has been reached in just three months and with second doses also now being provided it means even more jabs have been given.

It's anticipated that by mid-April all of the first phase priority groups 1 to 9, which includes all over 50s, defined clinically extremely vulnerable individuals and adults aged 18-65 in an at-risk group, will have been offered a vaccination in Tameside and Glossop.

Anyone in these priority groups who have not yet been vaccinated are urged to book their appointment at their local vaccination hub by contacting their GP practice. They can also travel to the mass vaccination centre at the Etihad and are able to book this via the national booking system at or by calling 119.

NHS Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Co-chairmen Dr Asad Ali and Dr Ashwin Ramachandra said: "We're delighted to have reached the major milestone of 100,000 residents being vaccinated so soon. We'd like to thank every single person who has been involved in organising our vaccine hubs, administering the vaccine and volunteered to help for their tireless efforts as well as all those who have come forward to receive their vaccine.

"All five hubs have been working flat out to get people vaccinated and we're so proud to have protected so many people and to be playing our part in the fight against Covid."

Tameside Council Executive Member for Public Health, Cllr Eleanor Wills, added: "It's fantastic that 100,000 people in Tameside and Glossop are now better protected against death and serious illness from Covid. Our amazing local vaccination teams are continuing to provide protection and I'd urge anyone in the nine priority groups who hasn't yet booked in to receive their jab to do so as soon as possible. All vaccines available are absolutely safe and effective and are the best protection against becoming seriously ill or dying from this terrible virus. Please don't hesitate – our teams are friendly and professional and are there to guide you through the process which is very quick and simple."

NHS Tameside and Glossop CCG worked quickly in partnership with GPs and Tameside Council to establish GP-led Primary Care Network (PCN) vaccine hubs.

A drive-through Hyde NHS Covid-19 Vaccination Service opened at Hyde Leisure Centre on 16 December followed quickly by hubs in PCNs for Ashton, Glossop (covering Gamesley), Denton (covering Droylsden and Audenshaw), and Stalybridge (covering Dukinfield and Mossley).

The rapid rollout was made achievable through strong partnership working between the CCG, General Practices, Council's adult social care service and care homes.
