IT’S going to be a busy summer for Tameside’s markets. Not only is Love your Local Market Fortnight under way, but there are big changes in the pipeline in Ashton and Hyde.
Following on from the success of Stalybridge Artisan Market, a similar monthly event is to be launched in Hyde on Saturday, July 2, with support from the Hyde Town Team and Paper Tulips, a gifts and crafts business on Market Street.

In Ashton, the regeneration of the market ground is nearing completion and traders are already moving into the new kiosks.

Lots of events are lined up for Love Your Local Market fortnight which last until the end of the month. There are cookery demonstrations in Ashton and Hyde, the About Tameside Celebrating Food and Drink Awards, and children have the chance to meet mascots Maggie the Market Magpie and Teddy Tameside.

To top everything off, Tameside Council markets manager Nicola Martin has been named National Market Traders Federation Market Manager of the Year.

Tameside Council’s deputy leader, Cllr John Taylor, who has responsibility for markets, said: “Markets are at the heart of our borough and have been for many, many years.

“As an authority we always want to encourage people to shop locally and support independent businesses.

“Our markets are popular because of the great traders who run the stalls and shops, and the highly dedicated management team who put in so much hard work.”
