Liz Attenborough, who runs Magpie’s Nest in Stalybridge, was one of around 100 entrepreneurs invited as part of Small Business Saturday to visit Number 10 Downing Street, guests included Chancellor George Osborne and Karen Brady, Sir Alan Sugar’s right-hand woman in BBC’s The Apprentice.
Liz, a former account manager in the food industry, opened the Armentieres Square shop last year selling jewellery, bags, scarves and other accessories for ‘birds on a budget’.
Liz said,
“I was nervous but it was just a really nice day and I came away feeling quite inspired.
“It can get quite lonely running a small business so it was nice to meet people in the same situation and everyone was really excited and pleased for each other.”
Liz, who won start-up business of the year at this year’s Pride of Tameside Business Awards, has raised hundreds of pounds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in memory of late dad Chris who inspired her to open the shop.
She added: “We have only been open a year and a half so we have achieved quite a lot really. For us to win two awards in a year was beyond my expectations but in a really good way.
Liz ended her trip with a private tour of the Houses of Parliament organised by Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds
