Berendsen Uk,the commercial laundry company formerly known as Sunlight, could stop operations at it's Oxford Street factory in march if closure plans go ahead.

The company has entered into a 45 day consultation with workers who were devastated when the plans were unveiled and many were extremely angry as the plant is one Berendsen's most profitable plants.

One employee said "the sad part about it is the site is making money, many people have worked here for 40 years or more. These are local Tameside people some in their 60's who will find it hard to get another job"'

The Central Services director at Berensden said the proposed closure was because new ways of working were not compatible with the  "age and condition of the machinery on the site".

Coun.Warren Bray, who represents the ward where the factory stands, stated that Tameside Council would be willing to work with Berensden Uk to find a solution saying if approached "the local authority would pull out all the stops to find them alternative accommodation, we've got modern units that are vacant".
