YOUNG people from across Tameside will be performing at Manchester Academy 2 for the Band Skills Summer Showcase 2023 on Sunday 2 July.

The event offers young people the opportunity to take part in a high-level quality performance, whilst working with a team of industry professionals from Manchester Academy – a world-class venue that regularly hosts some of the biggest artists from across the globe.

The Summer Showcase is ran by Tameside Music Service (TMS) and is a culmination of work by the young musicians throughout the past academic year. It will involve nine bands and around 70 pupils from Tameside schools and TMS centre. Ages of the participants range from 8 to 18.

If you would like go along to this event, audience tickets can be purchased here. Performers will arrive at 4pm. Doors open at 5pm and the show will begin at 5:30. The show will end at 8pm.

This event takes place each year, with stages in recent years including POP in Hyde, Band on the Wall and the Royal Northern College of Music.

Participants have gotten involved by attending a school project, after school club or whole class project. Others have begun with instrument lessons, which have led to them joining a band.

Band Skills sessions can be provided in local schools, as an after school or lunchtime project, or even as a whole class music curriculum project.

Additionally, the Band Skills Hub is hosted every Wednesday evening at TMS centre, for those who want to take their music making further, form bands and play regular gigs around Tameside and Manchester.

Tutors from TMS facilitate as pupils play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals to form a band whilst learning their favourite songs and even writing their own.

From research, it is evident that group music making offers a huge range of benefits to those involved, not only in terms of musical skill but also in building confidence, self-esteem, benefitting mental health, developing important social skills and learning to work as a team.

Tameside Council Executive Member for Education and Achievement, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said: "We are extremely proud of the young people from Tameside, who are taking part in such an amazing event.

"It is great to see how music can bring people together and benefit individuals in such a wide range of ways such as education, social skills and adapting within a team, all whilst having fun!"
