TAMESIDE’S four museums and galleries have retained  full Arts Council England accreditation, enabling them to continue to be eligible for funding from national bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund. The scheme assesses the procedures and practices of almost 1,800 museums.

To qualify for the award they have to meet strict standards on all aspects of their work, such as the services they offer and the effective management of their collections for the enjoyment and benefit of users. They are invited to reapply every three years.

Portland Basin Museum, Ashton, the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Stalybridge, the Museum of the Manchester Regiment, Ashton and Tameside Central Art Gallery, Ashton, have all been awarded the accolade.

Tameside Council’s executive member for culture Jackie Lane, said: “This is fantastic news for our museums and galleries and a great endorsement of the dedication that goes into the running of each venue.”
